Nancy Julson is an illustrator and artist based in Los Angles. She has been working professionally as an illustrator for over five years, and has created work for magazines, newspapers, and ad campaigns. She has shown her work and is in collections both nationally and abroad. Nancy has always been fascinated by yearbooks, and the concept of visually cataloguing people and circumstances in a formal, structured way. The students are captured in the height of adolescence with experimental hairdos and clothing that reflect the styles of their era. In drawing the students at possibly the most awkward stage of life, her aim is not to expose and make fun of the photos but to celebrate them. Nancy also does custom yearbook illustrations upon request.
This piece is an original graphite drawing from a series of fifty portraits drawn from a 1967 high school yearbook (“Cardinal”). It was drawn on archival paper.
